| The
Wesley Experience
Surrendering to the Spirit
A new title, replaces the booklet
"The
John Wesley Great Experiment"
After
more than forty years we are convinced that this challenge is no
longer just an experiment. The Wesley Experience says
it better.
John Wesleys experience of the power
of the Holy Spirit within his warm heart led him through a remarkably full and productive life. Other faith traditions
recognize Wesleys experience of personal and communal
spiritual power that birthed the Wesleyan movement in England,
in America, and throughout the world.
This new edition commemorates the selection of this program
by The Commission of United Methodist Men as the spiritual formation
emphasis for 2001, and beyond. This is the workbook companion
to A Life That Really Matters.

Light and Fire
By Nancy Pfaff |
In Light and Fire, author Nancy Pfaff shares the spiritual biography of Danny E. Morris, cofounder of the John Wesley Great Experiment. Morris, now retired after forty-six years in the United Methodist ministry, has challenged thousands of people to put God first in their lives.
Morris created the Living Prayer Center, the Upper Room Program Unit that he led for sixteen years, and the Academy for Spiritual Formation, for which he has served as Executive Director for twenty years. He helped initiate a United Methodist monastery, the Walk to Emmaus movement and developed the Prayerful Discernment Network for "A New Kind of Church," which involves representatives from more than six hundred churches. Pfaff traces Morris' development as a remarkable Christian leader from his childhood connection with God to his continuing efforts to help individuals discern God's will in their lives and experience the healing power of humor. The foreword by Maxie Dunnam details his deep friendship with Morris and how it shaped each man's career, while interviews with Morris' closest family and friends provide new insight into his personal faith journey. Ultimately, Light and Fire presents a powerful message of how countess lives were changed through one man's faith in God and his commitment to walk through the light of Jesus' teachings into the transforming fire of the Holy Spirit. "Our
Spirits Are Meant To Laugh!"

...not
continuously, but perhaps more frequently than they do. And humor is a spiritual gift of God to the human family, given to all of God's children through the Holy Spirit. These two ideas guide Danny Morris's life and ministry. This book leads readers to find the humor within themselves and to use their own stories to bring joy to others.

Prayerful
Discernment White Papers
The following White Papers focus discernment
beyond ordinary settings.
Price: $5.00 - Plus Postage
Paper #1: The Gift That Has Been Given To The Church
This is a forthright plan for undertaking Total Church Discernment. When you have a special issue that needs the prayerful attention of more than a committee or even the entire church board, call for the whole congregation to enter into communal discernment over an entire liturgical year.
The liturgical pattern may be dropped if your church does not mark the liturgical seasons, or wishes to begin at another time. The Board may appoint a discerning group to adjust the pattern of "A Gudie for Doing Prayerful Discernment" to a totally different calendar framework suitable for your church.
Three ultimate goals - to discern God's will on a vital question for your church, to responsibly address the question of what is the church's mission, and to systematically utilize Sanctuary, House, and Closet to involve everyone in total-church discernment.
The plan is The plan is suitable for a congregation of any size and for judicatories, both of which have utilized it. Sort of embarking upon an entire year of discernment, this paper features many discernment principles that are essential in the general practice of prayerful discernment.
Copying is permited.

Paper #2: The Committee On Lay Leadership
The most important committee in the church is The Committee on Lay Leadership. This committee is charged with identifying and developing Christian spiritual leaders. If the committee nominates spiritually-oriented persons for all positions, instead of nominating perfunctory people who will offer perfunctory leadership, the church will thrive.
This paper is focused on how this committee works as a "Prayer-Nominating Committee" that meets every month as a prayer group and makes their nominations in the context of prayerful discernment.
A second focus is on assuring that the committee itself, is made up of spiritually mature persons who are equipped to make prayerful nominations of spiritual leaders.
A church that wishes to incorporate prayerful discernment in governance is fully dependent upon The Committee on Lay Leadership functioning as a "Prayer-Nominating Committee.
We are dealing here with not only The Committee on Lay Leadership in it's role of nominating spiritual leaders, but also with:
-
the church's highest value
-
the pastor as spiritual guide
-
prayerful discernment and Rober's Rules of Order
-
consensus and the "sense of the meeting"
-
and a new kind of meeting for a new kind of church
This paper was prepared for United Methodist churches, but you can easily make adjustments in nomenclature according to your polity and structure. This paper gets to the actual beginning point for a congregation wishing to become a Prayerful Discernment Church, which is the Committee on Lay Leadership - or your church's counterpart.
Copying is permitted.
Paper #3: A Season Of Prayer This is a tested and workable plan for uniting a congregation in prayer on a vital concern.
Although the time frame is adjustable, our congregation held our "Season of Prayer" from Labor Day until Thanksgiving Sunday.
Each Sunday morning worship service featured a progression of methods of prayer that were taught and experienced as we were learning to pray together.
After we selected the all-important prayer focus we entered into seasons of silent prayer, communal prayer, spoken prayer at the altar and prayer while we were seated in the pews. We offered homilies and guidance on prayer froms, including the Korean form of "Tong Sung Kido," and we ended with a church-wide prayer vigil.
The results of our "Season of Prayer" were surprising, even astounding! Our church moved to a new level of spirituality and found its way forward from a stalled position as it carved out an entirely new future.
Copying is permitted.
Paper #4: How to Become a Spiritually Humorous Church
This ten-page paper begins with the funny story of "The Crotchety Old Man." It has some additional humorous content and cartoons, but the focal point is "The Prayer to the Holy Spirit:
"Come, Holy Spirit,
Purify the thoughts of my mind
and the words of my mouth.
God, give me the spiritual gift of humor
so my spirit can laugh with your Spirit.
Loving God,
Show me how to share the gift of humor
so others may laugh as you intended.
Amen.
This paper is about the spiritual gift of humor-how to Receive it; how to Claim it; how to Activate it. There are sections for the Pastor, the Humorist, the Trendsetters, the committee for the Humor Newsletter, the Humor Talent Show Committee, and a section on humorous Scripture passages. There is a strong section on cleaning up one's humor (if any) that is crude, sexist, racist, vulgar, or otherwise inappropriate, and replacing it with spiritual humor. The curriculum of spiritual humor provided in Sunday school and church is a constant invitation for persons to make the exchange from inappropriate humor to spiritual humor as they pray "The Prayer to the Holy Spirit."
