Which do you prefer, spirituality or
humor? It is not necessary to choose one over the other. They do not
always come together but they always go together. Check your watch: you
will not have one for long without the other. (Written awkwardly for
emphasis!) If either one lags behind, you will want to know why? Good
spirituality produces good humor and the good-humored person experiences
spirituality as a bonus.
What is spirituality? It is living one’s life in a personal
God-orientation.
What is humor? It is a slice of life that produces some level of
laughter by the way it is uniquely set apart from everything around it.
Spirituality equals life. Humor equals a slice of life. Each works best
when operating within the same life at the same time.
That is why we talk here of “spiritslaughing” as a way of thinking about
the union of spirituality and humor. Our spirit has been given the
capacity to laugh, and it can operate at full capacity only when it is
enriched by the presence of humor. (Keep reading this until you get it!)
Our humor cannot be experienced nor expressed without the involvement of
our spirit—because humor is profoundly spirit-ual.
If we insist on having one without the other, we end up with neither. A
spiritually dead person without a sense of humor does not need to check
their bags because they are going nowhere, and no one wants to go with
them.
We shall not be sorry if we assume for about a lifetime that our spirits
are made to laugh! |
